Brief Description:
History at Wimbledon
- Federer's 15th singles title at Wimbledon on Sunday was worth remembering on many counts.
- The final match ran the full 5 set course. The last set was the longest ever played in a men's Wimbledon final. Federer won it 16-14.
- Federer won the match 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) 3-6, 16-14 to eclipse Pete Sampras’ record of winning 14 Grand Slam titles.
- This was Federer's 7th straight final's appearance at Wimbledon.
- This is one of those rare matches when a player has lost the match despite winning the majority of games played. Andy Roddick lost to Roger Federer despite winning more games (39-38).
- Federer, 27, now has six Wimbledon titles, five US Opens, three Australian Opens and a French Open trophy.
US Open results
- Men's Singles
- Juan Martin del Potro ended Roger Federer’s run of dominance at the U.S. Open on Monday, stunning the top-ranked Swiss great in five sets to win in his first Grand Slam final.
- The 20-year-old Argentine prevailed 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to snap Federer’s streak of five straight U.S. Open titles. The sixth-seeded del Potro had not beaten Federer in their six previous encounters
- Women's Singles
- Kim Clijsters won the U.S. Open in just her third tournament back after 2-1/2 years of retirement and 18 months after the birth of her daughter.
- The unseeded, unranked Belgian beat No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday night to become the first mother to win a Grand Slam title since Australian Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980. It’s Clijsters’ second major championship -- she also won at Flushing Meadows in 2005, her last appearance at the Open.
- Men's doubles
- Leander Paes won the battle of Indians as well as his 10th Grand Slam title after defeating old pal Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles in the US Open men’s doubles final along with his partner Lukas Dlouhy.
- Women's doubles
- The Williams sisters won the U.S. Open women’s doubles title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over defending champions Cara Black and Liezel Huber.
- It couldn’t have been more unlike the scene on Saturday night, when Williams got called for a foot fault that triggered her outburst at a line judge. That resulted in a point penalty on match point against Kim Clijsters, and an ugly departure from the singles semifinal.
Asafa Powell wins 100 metres in Pedros Cup
- Asafa Powell dominated the field to win the 100 metres in 9.82 seconds, and Tyson Gay cruised to victory in the 200 at the Pedros Cup.
- The Pedros Cup is an annual Athletics (track and field) competition that takes place each year in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The event typically draws top level competition. At the 2008 event, Asafa Powell became the first sprinter to turn in a sub-10 second 100 metres time in Poland.
